Tourists in Los Angeles often pay a ton of money to have a lazy tour guide drive them around neighborhoods of beverly hills and show them homes that are “supposedly” owned by famous people. Well, I rarely ever hear from anyone that they have a great time on these types of tours. It is a great option, though, if you don’t have a car. But if you want to really see Beverly Hills and thousands of amazing mansions and castles, I suggest that you rent a car for a day and drive around. Even locals will drive around Beverly Hills looking at houses for pleasure, seriously; homes around here are freakin’ huge and are amazing. But the two that stand out to me must be the Spadena House (also known as the LA witch house) and the Greystone Mansion.
These two places are neither secret. Greystone Mansion is technically a park and is owned by the city of Beverly Hills and the LA Witch House is quite popular, but they are still great sites to see.
Locations: Both Witch House and Greystone Mansion are in Beverly Hills and they are only a short drive from one another.
Spadena House (Witch House) address: 516 Walden Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210
Greystone Mansion: 905 Loma Vista Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210
Cost: Both places are free to visit
Visit: Greystone Mansion is open to public 7 days a week to go and explore. Spadena House is a private resident, and while you can’t really explore the interior, you can still drive by and see it from the outside.
The mansion was built in 1928 by an oil tycoon, Edward Doheny, to his son. Doheny is also a name of a street in LA. Apparently, this guy was a real deal back then. The city of Beverly Hills bought it in 1965 and has been managed by the department of Parks & Recreation since.
Today, the Greystone mansion is open to the public to enjoy. I have been here a couple of times to walk around. It is quite a site to see. The house is huge and the architecture is beautiful. There are constantly events going on here and are sometimes used as filming location (like everything else pretty in LA).
Another popular filming location in LA is the famous Angel Knolls Park, which appeared in 500 Days of Summer.
This storybook inspired house was originally built an art director, Harry Oliver, a famous story book architect. It was originally a film studio in Culver City before being moved to this current location. It became a private house owned by the Spadena Family, and the name sticks since.
I’d like to call it the Witch House, since it resembles something witches from Disney movies would live in. The pointy top, the Disney-esque garden, the curve bridge, and tall grown trees are all very magical. It’s hard to believe that this place actually exist; seriously, this house belongs in DIsneyland.
Both sites are great free places to explore in Los Angeles. If you need a weekend activity that don’t cost money, then maybe pay these two sites a visit.
